Shahid Kapoor opens up on Kabir Singh Controversy, says ‘I’ve witnessed physical abuse as child’

The discussion around Shahid Kapoor’s 2019 blockbuster Kabir Singh has gained a new dimension. He has stated that even though he understands why love is compared to physical violence in the movie—he had experienced physical abuse as a child—he thinks that “everyone deserves a second chance” when they fall in love. Four years ago, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s remake of his Telugu smash Arjun Reddy, which had just been released, Kabir Singh, shook up the Bollywood scene. Many criticized the film for glorifying its titular character, an aggressive man who was physically violent in a romantic connection with Preeti, played by Kiara Advani, despite the fact that it was a smash hit at the box office.

Shahid Kapoor talked about his childhood

“As a kid, I witnessed physical violence. I get what you’re saying. However, it was simply a dysfunctional love affair between a very unassuming girl and a very gifted, intelligent, violent, and disturbed man. And things like that occur every day,” Shahid stated in an interview with Mid-Day.

Shahid further stressed that he did not regard Kabir Singh as a “hero” or a “anti-hero,” but rather as the main character in a narrative. He continued by saying that not all heroes are good guys, just as Devdas wasn’t because he physically hurt Paro. Shahid, however, was keen to point out that he believes Devdas to be a fantastic movie.

Shahid says ‘everyone deserves a second chance’

“My point is, have we not all made mistakes in love? Are all people perfect in every way? Even the most useless person deserves a second chance. Saying, “This guy is a great guy! is an example of this. He performed flawlessly. Never was that spoken. You should watch the advertisement because every line there says, “He’s disturbed.” He’s a challenge. He has trouble controlling his rage. He is unable to fit in with society and is detrimental to himself. So you establish that this is a movie about this kind of character right at the start of the promo. He was never described as being a nice guy. However, I suppose that for some people, it becomes a matter of right and wrong.’
