Movies that helped Sridevi become a star, from Sadma to Mom

New Delhi: The evergreen superstar Sridevi, born on August 13, 1963, was an iconic actress and film producer. Coming from a South Indian family background, she started her film career in South Indian movies.

At the age of four, she made her debut as a child artist in a Tamil film, Kandhan Karunai which was released in 1967. After appearing in multiple films, in the South Indian Cinema, she made her Bollywood debut in Solva Sawan, released in 1979. She received recognization for the action movie, Himmatwala in 1983.

Here are some of her movies that received audience’s huge attention:

Sadma (1983)

‘Sadma’, was a tragic love story opposite kamal Hasan which helped Sridevi receive recognition in Bollywood. Her portrayal of young adults reflected her abilities as an actor.

Himmatwala (1983)

It was Sridevi’s first commercial hit opposite superstar Jeetendra. The music and the casting of the film were appreciated by the audience. It was the highest-grossing film of that year.

Toffa (1984)

The film was about a love triangle. It also featured Jeetendra and Jaya Parda. The dance number ‘Tohfa Tohfa Laya Laya’ became an overnight hit.

Nagin (1985)

Sridevi played the role of ‘Nagin’, opposite Rishi Kapoor. Her dance moves as Nagin stole the hearts of the audience. The famous song ‘’Main Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera’ was a big hit.

Mr. India (1987)

Even though Sridevi had less screen time compared to Anil Kapoor, she grabbed eyeballs with her brilliant performance as a chirpy girl. After the super hit film, Sridevi was also known as Miss. Hawa Hawai.

Chandni (1989)

Sridevi appeared in a double role and showcased her acting skills to the fullest. Sridevi won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for this film. It is one of her most-loved films.

Chalbaaz (1989)

The actress played the roles of twins Anju and Manju in the film. She impressed the viewers with her acting skills in the movie, which gave her the first Filmfare award for Best Actress.

Judaai (1997)

The story of this film was different. The character that the role demanded was well provided by Sridevi’s portrayal of Kajal. Sridevi played the role of a woman who was greedy and later desperate to get her husband back. It was one of Sridevi’s best performances.

English Vinglish (2012)

This was her comeback film. It displayed a regular housewife learning English and overcoming her drawbacks. Sridevi as Sashi looked so natural that people could connect to the character. Sridevi won many awards, including outstanding performance of the year by Hello Magazine Hall of Fame Awards.

Mom (2017)

Sridevi played the role of a mother whose daughter was raped, and she fought to get justice for her. She was posthumously awarded by Padma Shri, which was received by her husband Boney Kapoor.
‘Mom’ was not only her last film, but it was also her 300th film.
